A Simple Tool for Comparing Architecture Styles

2025-03-24 by Adam Banaszkiewicz

Recently, we introduced a small yet useful tool on our website that helps developers and architects compare different architecture styles. The tool presents a structured table that evaluates various architectural approaches - such as microservices, modular monolith, and event-driven architectures - against key architectural drivers.

What Does the Tool Do?

The main idea behind this tool is to provide a quick and visual way to assess how well different architecture styles align with specific architectural drivers. Each column in the table represents an architecture style, while the rows indicate various drivers like scalability, maintainability, fault tolerance, and more.

To make the comparison clearer, the tool uses a star rating system :

  • More stars mean that a particular architecture style strongly supports the given driver.
  • Fewer stars indicate weaker support.

Additionally, the table includes a cost indicator for each architecture style. This helps in evaluating whether the benefits of a specific style justify the investment required to implement and maintain it.

Why Is This Useful?

Choosing an architecture style is often a complex decision involving trade-offs. With this tool, teams can quickly grasp which architectures align best with their needs and constraints. It’s particularly helpful when discussing architectural choices with stakeholders who may not be deeply technical but still need to understand the impact of different decisions.
